washingtonpost.com: Kerry Unveils Ad Countering Attacks Over Vietnam: “With polls showing that most Americans know about the veterans’ attacks on Kerry, the issue has sharpened the race.

On Long Island, N.Y., Saturday night, a group of wealthy supporters cried, ‘Fight back, fight back,’ as Kerry spoke. And yesterday, former senator Robert J. Dole (R-Kan.), whose right arm was disabled during World War II, attacked Kerry, agreeing with critics. ‘One day he’s saying that we were shooting civilians, cutting off their ears, cutting off their heads, throwing away his medals or his ribbons,’ Dole said on CNN’s ‘Late Edition.’ ‘The next day he’s standing there, ‘I want to be president because I’m a Vietnam veteran.’ Maybe he should apologize to all the other 2.5 million veterans who served. He wasn’t the only one in Vietnam.'”

I just totally don’t get the outrage of veterans against people to talk bad about a war.

Isn’t that like cops hating people who speak out against crime? “Hey, I fight crime every day and so I love crime. If you don’t love crime you don’t love me?”

So the vets are proud that they served the country. Can’t somebody be proud they served the country but still hate the war that they fought in? Can a soldier not hate the things he saw, and still be proud to have been a soldier. Seems like the only folks qualified to protest a war, the only folks with an entirely vested interest are the soldiers themselves. I would think that all soldiers ought to be peacemongers as a survival instinct.

But then my logic never seems to make sense.

Should we all be saying, “Hey, you know what we need? More war. That’s it! Just the thing!”

“Why do you say that, my friend?”

“Because war makes us proud. War is good. War makes people go kill other people and then they get to feel good about themselves and self righteous and then they get to look down their noses at people who don’t fight in the war. They get to hate people who do not love the war. Because if you hate the war, you hate the soldiers. If you hate soldiers you are Un-American. And bad. Love war. War Good.”

I realize it takes a special type of person to be a soldier. And theoretically one would not want squeamish soldiers. But we don’t have to love the war to take care of our soldiers, do we? Can’t we say, “this war is wrong,” in order to PROTECT our soldiers? Duh. F-ing duh. Grr.

Makes me mad.

“I was in the war. You were not. You can’t say anything about the war”

“Hey, I was in the war! Can I say I feel used and shameful?”

“No, sorry. That would make you bad and Un-American. You may say that you are proud to defend the country. You may say that you like to blow stuff up. But you may not criticize the war that we asked you to fight for us.”

I just don’t get it. Dole was in a war. Kerry was in a war. Doesn’t that mean they are both in the club? Kiss and make up. You both have the right to be indignant.
