absence, skating, new year

Well, I have neglected my blog for entirely too long. Perhaps I have a resolution after all. But that really is another post.

One problem is that although I have been skating, I have gotten somewhat complacent. I have also been annoyed with the changes at my home rink. Ick.

But with a new year, I have accomplished a new thing or two.

New year’s eve we spent on the rink. We went to Kennesaw because we learned when we stopped in at Hiram–at like 10:30pm that it would be $15 each for us to skate cause it was an all night skate and we couldn’t even go back out to smoke. Luckily we had allies at the door that warned us of these things so we wished them all a happy new year and headed for Kennesaw.

(Now for an aside. We learned a whole lot more than was really healthy about the secret inner workings of Sparkles, in the mean time. We chatted with a now former employee and learned of all the recent firings. Not necessarily unwarranted–if I were the employer and not the slacker customer I would have fired them too I bet, but that is just the adult in me. We learned enitrely too much about said 18 year old teen mom’s plans for the night, too. I don’t need to know about drugs. I know enough thank you. But we smiled and nodded. And wished her a happy new year. Oh well. But now I know all sorts of juicy gossip about people I really didn’t need to know that much about. Where to file this info, anyway? On with the story….)

Now, while our allies at the door warned us that there would be about 300 kids inside and that newly signed Atlanta rapper Kudzu would be appearing–at Hiram–there were about 20 people at Kennesaw. We were the only adults skating and we had a good time.

I got the feel of scissoring my feet pretty well, I just need more strength in my legs. My legs are already 100% stronger now than they were a year ago. Just 2 days of scissoring and I can feel a change already. Won’t be long now.

Today, My pal Sponge Bob played a Godsmack song for me and she made it a quasi-speed skate. It meant we could go fast, but the other folks didn’t have to leave the rink. Well, I skated fast. I speed skated!!!!! And I had more stamina than anyone else. I didn’t fall and I didn’t really slow down at all through the entire song. I may not have been the fastest, but I went the distance. I am so cool. Have you not figured that out yet?

Of course, now I am way too tired to be very witty about anything, but I am very very proud of myself. My partner and I paced a lot today and stayed in step a lot, I had rhythm and moves all day. I shook off a lot of self-conciousness and tried new stuff. (It helped that the cool kids were not there, just the folks we like and talk to). My little boyfriend was even there and fully present to speak with us since he and his apparent coworker girlfriend apparently broke up (another unbidden juicy tidbit). I made an even smaller boyfriend–a very friendly first grader that did the Cha-Cha Slide with me. It was nice to feel less alone, though. I did, however (and for this I feel guilty, a little….) avoid him the rest of the day cause I didn’t want to hold him up while he skated. Hopefully his skills will catch up with his affectionate charisma soon and I won’t need to hide from the 6 year old. (for the record, I don’t let my own kids hang onto me. I refuse to let them take me down. I need to be able to walk for the rest of my life. However, the possible charmic repercussions of that attitude have not escaped me and are plaguing me even now…)

Anyway, I discovered a lovely link last night to About Jam Time and I dunno who did it, but I am grateful, cause they put up all their video footage of Summer Nationals (remember the hype?!?!) including the battle circle from that Saturday night. There are also links to video footage of team Breaksk8 GA from last summer. Said team has a new sponsor but I dunno what it is…..arg. I’ll find out if I can get to the rink on Wednesday.

I will save my ranting a raving about Mr. Crabs and his lovely wife Squidward another time. Ugh!

Happy New Year!!
